Emilie Stifkens, Project Manager Maltem Belux

How I describe my role at a glance:

My role is to organise, coordinate and deliver a project on time, within budget (including resources) and within a defined scope.

This implies setting different deadlines (with the sponsor and management, with the project team, with third parties,...), assigning responsibilities (having the right person in the right place), monitoring and summarising the progress of the project (report to management, project status with the project team). But also to keep risks constantly on the radar and to develop mitigation plans. Last but not least, good communication (oral and written) is essential to fulfil this role, to get people on board with the project and to get management on your side.

Expertise : IT project manager / IT project manager

The main axes of project management will be present in every project: scope, budget, resources, planning - under this or other terminology.
In addition to identifying and defining these markers, the project manager needs to be able to understand and know the ecosystem in which he or she finds him or herself: the type of organisation, the management style, the size of the company, the corporate culture and the sector of activity, as these elements can influence the way in which a project will be managed

I have had the opportunity to take on the role of project manager in the banking sector as well as in the retail sector. Even if the fundamentals remained the same, I could observe some differences resulting directly from the ecosystem, here are some examples (not exhaustive and based on my own experience):

In general, a good understanding and knowledge of the ecosystem will enable the project manager to define the most appropriate organisation for the project: in terms of governance, management (KPI measurement tools vs. anticipation tools, risk assessment, development of a backup plan, etc.), test plan, etc. In my opinion, no project will ever be identical to another, which is what makes our job so rich and on projects where we can create our added value.
